Water Polo: NSW Blues Make It A Double Celebration At 20s’ Nationals

Sydney (January 24).— New South Wales Blues made it a double celebration, winning both the men’s and women’s crowns at the 20 years and under national water polo championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre today.

The men were too strong for Western Australia, winning 11-5 and the women defeated Queensland 8-4.

WA’s Aaron Younger, who scored a tournament-high 21 goals, was named the player of the series but his three goals were not enough to stop the rampant Blues, who lost the title to Queensland last year.

Victoria beat NSW Waratahs 9-7 for the bronze medal.

The NSW Blues women, ably spearheaded by player-of-the-series Bree Appel with three goals, downed previously undefeated Queensland 8-4. The teams were locked at 11-11 in their preliminary round encounter.

NSW Waratahs needed a penalty shootout to claim the bronze medal, beating WA 10-8 after the game was level at 6-all by full time and 8-all after two periods of extra time.

WA missed all three of its shots from the penalty line while NSW gained an unassailable lead with conversions of its second and third attempts in the five-shot rota.

WA’s Zoe Arancini scored three goals to finish the tournament with 33 goals, the same number as NSW Blues’ Nicola Zagame.

The tournament’s two best players, Younger and Appel, were members of the national 18 and under teams that won medals at last week’s Australian Youth Olympic Festival, also in Sydney.

Going For The Chase: The Traditional Fox Hunt

Going For The Chase: The Traditional Fox Hunt

In the times before William The Conqueror “beasts of the chase” were hunted by groups of men mounted on horseback in the name of protecting livestock and farmland.

These groups were made up of all different Nimrods(people who hunt), each taking a set role. With the Master Of The Hunt commanding the actions of the Huntsmen, and the Whippers-in and Terrier Man keeping the hounds in check; the fox hunt has remained a sport that tightly maintains age-old traditions.

Traditions embedded in the fox hunting sport have a greater level of depth than simply wearing “Pinks” (scarlet hunting coats) and shouting catchphrases. It is understood that even in these modern times of cities and environmental destruction, there are 750,000 foxes in Britain- this number doubles every Spring and the implication of this is more fox burrows in soil where forest plants should grow and more foxes that need to prey on other species to live. This in turn, causes major environmental imbalance, creating the need for poisonous bates, traps and inhumane methods of biological control. Working in a team with horses and hounds, and knowing the land and the other animals which inhabit it, Nimrods take it upon themselves, as the fox’s only natural predators, to control the fox population in the most humane way possible.

Although there is much scrutiny surrounding the fox hunt, the above reflects the arguments made by the British aristocracy in defence of the sport. Prince Charles, William and Harry have all been very public in supporting traditions laid down in royal generations before them, the family annually participate in the Beaufort Hunt.

Many hunts similar to the royally endorsed Beaufort Hunt happen globally in countries such as the USA and Australia. And while all these places differ in terrain, the same traditions are upheld to show the value of humanity working together with the land in a natural ritual.

Fresh Faces of Glamour at Victoria’s Secret Finale

Fresh Faces of Glamour at Victoria’s Secret Finale

Good things come in 3s, especially when it comes to 3 Australian models taking the spotlight at Miami’s Victoria’s Secret spectacular: as a part of the finale catwalk display at at Fontainebleau Hotel Miami beach.

The runway for the show was made from sand; to give a beachy atmosphere to this girly event.

As a warm up to the finale, the locals and the press were given a taste of what was to be expected when the girls showed off their perfect figures in matching white swim suits the day before the big show. Before the show, the pink carpet was laid, and the lights dimmed as spectators were left in the final moments of waiting with no idea what would be shown to them. The media went into a frenzy as all the models, Australians included trotted the catwalk in heavenly costumes that displayed “angelic fashion” in a very literal sense. Wearing wings, models dressed as angels showcased the new Summer line. The theme of the 2008 Victoria’s Secret event was: “a return of glamour” and it would be difficult to imagine anything more glamourous than this display.

Melbourne girl, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Sydney beauty Sara Stephens, looked like no strangers to the catwalk-following Miranda Kerr down the runway and launching themseleves into the leauge of names as big as Adrianna Lima and Heidi Klum.

This was the first time Victoria’s Secret was to show a complete collection. It was a mixture of romance and Vegas girl glam. The collection featured pieces from every extreme. Stepping away from the typical workaday bras woman choose to purchase daily from Victoria’s Secret outlets, they created a fairytale, a complete wonderland of glamour. All 35 of the

angels, walked the catwalk in pieces ranging from fun and flirty colourful separates, one of kind diamante brassieres and briefs and stunning one piece body suits teamed with Swarovski Crystals. And we can’t forget those amazing wings, which glistened brightest of all on Australian model, Miranda Kerr.
