Catwalk Imagery of New Creations at Fashion Palette 2010

The mission of the Fashion Palette organisation is to put a spotlight on creativity and encourage new blood into the fashion industry.

This mission was accomplished at every parade and party at the 2010 Fashion Palette event. Over two days, brand-new and well-known designers came together to celebrate fashion.

Against the water-side backdrop of Sydney’s Circular Quay, models strutted the latest accessories, swimwear and other wearables. The event did not aim to dictate trends. It’s aim was more to show the mastery of some of Australia’s best designers.

Everything seen on the catwalks and exhibition stands was unique and surprising. Every person who attended left the event convinced that all of Australia’s new fashion talent should be supported to the level of superstar status that many of our acclaimed designers enjoy.

From the outside, the world of fashion can appear glamorous, mysterious and impossible to break into. Now for a second time, Fashion Palette offered everyone the chance to soak up the skills, knowledge of leading fashion influences such as Wayne Cooper, Samantha Wills, Nikita Sernack and with Nicola Finetti, Camilla Franks and Charlie Brown who joined the Fashion Future segment. The Future Segments sets Fashion Palette aside from other fashion weeks, highlighting the importance of supporting new talent.

Ella Bache Splash | Swim & Resort Wear | Rosemount Australia Fashion festival 2010

Ella Bache Splash | Swim & Resort Wear | Rosemount Australia Fashion festival 2010

It is always a treat to see Karen Nielsen’s swimwear designs on parade. And although the same collection was presented earlier in the year, the pieces at Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival made a splendid opening to the Splash event. Examining the vintage inspired one-pieces or the high-waisted black bikinis, it is clear that every woman, no-matter their size or shape, will be looking good in a design by Karen Nielsen.

In the only parade at Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival that was totally dedicated to swimwear, the designs of Lisa Maree were sure to make an appearance. Lisa Maree is no stranger to the runways of Australian fashion weeks, but this label is not a fashion veteran yet. The design innovation in the colours and shapes of this swimwear demonstrates that Lisa Maree is a designer on the way up.

Daughter Of The Gods was third onto the runway, but it was the first time most members of the audience had heard of them. The bronzed models were adorned with feathers and fluros. The way the models strutted confidently reflects the mantra of the label. Daughter of The Gods was named after the movie made to tell the story of the first woman who demanded the right to wear comfortable and revealing swimwear.

Hotel Bondi Swim’s collections were oh-so-very Sydney. Within each piece the sights and sounds of Sydney’s world famous beachs and nightspots were echoed loudly.

While Hotel Bondi Swim echoed the sights and sounds of Sydney, Bond-Eye shouted them. The colourful prints on the Bond-Eye fabric sung praises of the hot and floral Australian Summer and the way it is celebrated in Bondi.

Sol Bellow is not a widely known about brand, but, with the way each piece has been designed to flatter every body shape, it will soon be a well known brand to beach-goers. Sol Below spreads design inspiration slink black one-pieces to micro-sized scorching red bikinis. The result of the different colours and shapes made a stimulating catwalk show that got the crowd excited for the Summer ahead.

On a boiling day, there is no better feeling than to drape the body with silk and rest poolside. Colin Heaney’s silk kaftans catored for this desire. There were rain-forrest greens and sunburnt reds flowing down the catwalk. For every different emotion evoked by Summer, Colin Heaney catored with a design.

After seeing the models strut the newest swimwear designs, it became clear that skimpy bikinis are the way to go. For Spring/Summer 2010, modesty comes in the form of a kaftan – to be stripped off in moments of heat. The look to-die-for this season is the same as every summer: a perfectly toned and tanned body with just a whisper of colour to complement the natural physique.

O’Hara designs presents a Spring/Summer 2010/2011 collection which is sophisticated and dynamic with a nostaligic twist.

Aquamarine is a feature-colour of O’Hara’s collection and triggers thoughts of slinking through the ballroom.

As seen on the runway at FACE Fashion, O’Hara’s designs are best teamed with sky-high heels to create a glamourous feminine look.

Perspective Apparel builds itself on the idea “the difference between style and fashion is perspective.”

This interesting concept came to life of the runways of FACE Fashion to prove that there is more to sexed-up style than sparkles and sleek cuts.

The collections shown could be looked at with the perspective that they are casual and perfect for lazing or that they are an opportunity to express yourself and be eccentric with dressing.

Perspective Apparel is not limited to one sex, and it’s open-for-interpretation concept that can be seen in each stitch demonstrates that this is a brand of clothing that can be fun and exciting to wear

FACE fashion was held at Sydney’s CarriageWorks. This was an appropriately edgy venue for the cutting edge designs that were showcased from emerging designers.

FACE fashion was a display put on by the designers who had been having their names whispered for the past few seasons. It was evident in every stitch on the runway that all designers were excited to be given recognition through their involvement.

Sydney Fashion Weekend Autumn/Winter 2010

Sydney Fashion Weekend Autumn/Winter 2010

Fashion Weekend is the highlight of the Sydney shopping year. It is a time when all the best known Australian designers lay out their wears and sell to the public at heavily discounted prices. For shoppers, it’s not only a time to get great discounts, but also to find out what’s hot and trendy for the season.

The catwalk at Fashion Weekend always steals the spotlight above all the other exhibitions. The Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Weekend showed designs from This Is Genevieve, Life With Bird, Fleur Wood, Hussy, Little Joe Woman, Muccia, Lucette and Shakuhachi.

Fashion Weekend is a public event which happens just one week after Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. After models have been dressed, faces have been made-up and hair has been styled for the last seven or eight days straight, a little tiredness is to be expected. But it was not so. Every model on the catwalk showed a bright new outfit, with every thread on the model for sale at the nearby stalls.

At Sydney Fashion Weekend, the catwalk does not only dictate new trends, it inspires the audience to shop, see and interact with the designers in the retail space. Seeing a hot frock paraded down the catwalk and being able to buy it five minutes later is a dream come true for shop-a-holics. Inspiring fashions and a chance to lay hands on a great bargain is what Sydney Fashion Weekend is all about.

Anna & Boy’s Spring/Summer 2010/11 collection was comprised of the binary ideas: tight and skimpy or loose and covering-all.

Bikini’s were made up of small squares of fabric with blocks of colour.

The rest of the collection features bright, flowing maxi dresses, again with blocked colours. There were also a few nature inspired modesty tops which would be perfect for slapping on over a bikini at a day at the beach.

The overall tone from the runway at Anna & Boy was casual. Everything that was paraded is highly wearable and can be expected to sell well in stores. There also seemed to be a cutesy undertone running down the catwalk, with the models sweet smiles expressing the attitude of the designers very clearly. Anna & Boy’s Spring/Summer 2010/11 collection is all about pure and simple beachy fun.

Zimmermann are famed for their bright colours and frilly cuts. It was a shock to audiences when models wearing white faces with vampish black lips were sent down the runway in monochromatic prints. Everything for the first few minutes of the Zimmerman show was black and white. These shades were contrasted through geometric, psychedelic patterns on long wavy pants and tight, high waisted shorts.

After the black and white, Zimmerman took the audiences for a ride over the rainbow, but everything was pastel. The precession began with violets and mauves. The standout pieces were frilly, high-waisted bikini bottoms made from shiny lycra.

_VIC9439

Aqua, yellow and peach followed the mauve. Every piece on the catwalk had three things in common: the pieces are patterned, they’re either very tight or very loose and everything is high-waisted.

In Australia, Zimmermann maintains 12 stand-alone stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, working with the highly acclaimed designer Don McQualter to create seductive and dynamic retail destinations.

In 2008 Zimmermann also launched their online boutique at www.zimmermannwear.com. David Jones and other high-end retailers stock the ready-to-wear and swimwear lines.

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week: Day One- Monday 3rd May 2010

_VIC2154

The first day of Rosemount Sydney Fashion Week has been known throughout its fifteen year history for being a day of highly-charged chaos.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal at Sydney’s Circular Quay was brimming with anticipation before the first show

At 9am sharp, a long line of fashion guests were lead into the darkness of the runway hall. Samantha Harris, of Indigenous Australian background was the first model to set foot on the runway. Harris was given the honour of opening for Lisa Ho. Lisa Ho is a designer famed for her wearable designs that are loved by many.

_VIC2055

While Lisa Ho started the runway schedule as a veteran fashion week exhibitionist, the second runway show was a first time debut. Seventh Wonderland proved themselves to be a label that will be long remembered for the stunning swimwear in their Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

Carly Hunter, Guanabana Designs, Story By Tang and Uscari all followed in the women’s ready-to-wear show

Following the women’s ready-to-wear was more ready-to-wear, but this time, it was coming from New Zealand. Zambesi showed a runway which made spectators sigh for a Summer far-away.

_VIC1913

Rachel Gilbert and Bassike were also first timers on the Rosemount Sydney Fashion Week runways.

As the afternoon wore on, experienced exhibitioners Bec & Bridge and Aurelio Costarella brought the events at the Circular Quay to a close.

Bevan Docherty Wins Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series

Bevan Docherty Wins Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series

2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series - Sydney -8905It was a great start to the 2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series for Kiwi veteran Bevan Docherty, who was victorious in Sydney, winning with a breakaway on the final lap of the run. Docherty won with a time of 1:51:27. It’s the second year in a row that Docherty has kicked off the world championship season with a win.

“It was a real tough course today,” Docherty said. “It was much harder than I expected, but I felt good heading into the final lap and was able to make a break. Winning in front of the Sydney Opera House is amazing.”

Behind Docherty was a pair of surprise podium finishers. Russia’s Alexander Brukhankov finished six seconds back of the Kiwi, barely holding off France’s David Hauss, who finished third, one second behind the Russian.2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series - Sydney -8868

Fifty-seven men took to the water’s of Farm Cove in beautiful Sydney Harbour to officially kick off the 2010 World Championship Season. Russia’s Alexander Brukhankov and Frenchman Frederic Belaubre immediately moved to the front, but were unable to make a break on the first 750-metre lap. The pack started to string out on the second loop, with the Russian men charging to the front. Russia’s Dmitry Polyansky led out of the swim, with a big group of almost 50 athletes exiting just behind.

Onto the first of eight laps on the bike, Aussie youngster James Seear, who finished third at the Mooloolaba World Cup two weeks ago, took over the leading role at the start of the hilly ride, with Docherty right on his wheel. Aussie Greg Bennett assumed the role of leading the chasers and kept the peloton within 10 seconds of the leaders throughout the first two laps.

At the halfway point of the ride, Belgium’s Peter Croes took charge of the race, with Russia’s Anton Chuchko and Spanish super-biker Ivan Rana on his wheel. Frenchman Laurent Vidal lead the group of big hitters, only eight seconds behind. Riding with Vidal were 2008 Olympic champion Jan Frodeno of Germany, Hunter Kemper of the United States and Docherty.

2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series - Sydney -8759Heading into the bell lap, Kemper and Chuchko worked together to make a break on the pack and started the final climb up Macquarie Street with a 35-second advantage on the pack. After a quick transition, Kemper headed out onto the four-lap run course in the lead, with Chuchko only seven seconds behind. Next into transition were France’s Tony Moulai and American Matt Chrabot, both 20 seconds back of Kemper. The big group made their way into T2 almost a minute behind Kemper, led by Docherty and countryman Kris Gemmell.

The pair of Americans began to pull away on the second lap of the run, building a 30-second lead but they weren’t able to hold off the hard charge from Docherty, who led a group of five chasers.2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series - Sydney -8903 The Kiwi made up half of that deficit on the third lap of the run, closing to within just 15 seconds. Running alongside Docherty were Brukhankov, Polyansky, Hauss and 2000 Sydney Olympic gold medallist Simon Whitfield of Canada.

Docherty, Brukhankov and Hauss caught the pair of leaders as they headed up the final hill on the bell lap, and there was little doubt that Docherty was running the strongest of the group. Docherty stretched his lead throughout the final kilometre, holding off the charge from Brukhankov and Hauss behind. Docherty broke the tape in 1:51:27, pumping his first as he sprinted down the finishing chute.

“I always enjoy the sprint finishes, but it was nice to have a little room to be able to celebrate the win a bit,” Docherty said at the finish.
