Chloe Sutton triumphs in 2009-2010 USA Swimming Grand Prix

The 2009-2010 USA Swimming Grand Prix concluded in Los Angeles on July 11, with Chloe Sutton crowned the overall Grand Prix Series High Point winner, collecting a total of $20, 000 in prize money.

The Grand Prix series consists of eight meets, beginning in Minneapolis on November 13, 2009, with the Los Angeles meet added to the calendar for the first time this year.

The Los Angeles meet was held at the University of Southern California from July 8-11.

Ms Sutton, who was a member of 2008 USA Olympic swimming team, put in an overwhelmingly dominant performance throughout this Grand Prix series, winning a total of sixteen gold medals, six silver and one bronze, earning a total of 99 points.

Her win is even more remarkable considering Ms Sutton did not compete in the Santa Clara meet of the Grand Prix series.

The race for second and third place in the Grand Prix series was much tighter, with Dagny Knuston coming in second place with a total of six gold medals and seven silver, earning 52 points and managing to narrowly defeat Dana Vollmer, who came in third place with a total of nine gold medals as well as one silver and bronze, earning 49 points.

Three meet records fell on day four of competition in Los Angeles, with Dana Vollmer setting a new record in the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 57.39.

Rebecca Soni set a new record in the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 1:06.23 and Kosuke Kitajima also established a new record for the men’s 100m butterfly, finishing the event with a time of 1:00.02.

Mr Kitajima also set a new meet record in day three of the meet in the men’s 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:11.14

On Day 3 of the Los Angeles meet, Katie Hoff shattered a ten year record in the women’s 400m freestyle, which had been set by Claudia Poll in 2000.

Ms Hoff completed the women’s 400m freestyle with a time of 4:06.21, which was almost three seconds faster than the record set by Poll, which was 4:09.04

And finallykick-started the Los Angeles meet with a bang by setting a new meet record (8:31.05) in the prelims of the women’s 800m freestyle

On day two, Ziegler followed up this performance by managing to shatter her own record in the finals of the women’s 800m freestyle, with a time of 8:25.89, which beat the record she had just set on day one by five seconds

Anna & Boy’s Spring/Summer 2010/11 collection was comprised of the binary ideas: tight and skimpy or loose and covering-all.

Bikini’s were made up of small squares of fabric with blocks of colour.

The rest of the collection features bright, flowing maxi dresses, again with blocked colours. There were also a few nature inspired modesty tops which would be perfect for slapping on over a bikini at a day at the beach.

The overall tone from the runway at Anna & Boy was casual. Everything that was paraded is highly wearable and can be expected to sell well in stores. There also seemed to be a cutesy undertone running down the catwalk, with the models sweet smiles expressing the attitude of the designers very clearly. Anna & Boy’s Spring/Summer 2010/11 collection is all about pure and simple beachy fun.

White Sands, as always, put on a show that made audiences sigh for the absence of Summer in May. The Cargo Theatre at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week was bathed in warm, yellow light to show the swimwear and resort wear in the same way that it would appear if it was seen in the sunshine.

The collection featured white one-piece swimwear, which wrapped around the female curves to demonstrate the wearers feminine beauty.

The white tight swimwear was contrasted with black maxi dresses that were fanned to show what the wearer would look like if they were walking through a Summer breeze.

High waists featured prominently in White Sands Spring/Summer 2010/2011 collection. Bikinis were designed to flatter the female chest and draw attention in a subtle way.

White Sands offers a swimwear collection which features something for everybody with all kinds of cuts and colours.

Zimmermann are famed for their bright colours and frilly cuts. It was a shock to audiences when models wearing white faces with vampish black lips were sent down the runway in monochromatic prints. Everything for the first few minutes of the Zimmerman show was black and white. These shades were contrasted through geometric, psychedelic patterns on long wavy pants and tight, high waisted shorts.

After the black and white, Zimmerman took the audiences for a ride over the rainbow, but everything was pastel. The precession began with violets and mauves. The standout pieces were frilly, high-waisted bikini bottoms made from shiny lycra.

_VIC9439

Aqua, yellow and peach followed the mauve. Every piece on the catwalk had three things in common: the pieces are patterned, they’re either very tight or very loose and everything is high-waisted.

In Australia, Zimmermann maintains 12 stand-alone stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, working with the highly acclaimed designer Don McQualter to create seductive and dynamic retail destinations.

In 2008 Zimmermann also launched their online boutique at www.zimmermannwear.com. David Jones and other high-end retailers stock the ready-to-wear and swimwear lines.

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week: Day One- Monday 3rd May 2010

_VIC2154

The first day of Rosemount Sydney Fashion Week has been known throughout its fifteen year history for being a day of highly-charged chaos.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal at Sydney’s Circular Quay was brimming with anticipation before the first show

At 9am sharp, a long line of fashion guests were lead into the darkness of the runway hall. Samantha Harris, of Indigenous Australian background was the first model to set foot on the runway. Harris was given the honour of opening for Lisa Ho. Lisa Ho is a designer famed for her wearable designs that are loved by many.

_VIC2055

While Lisa Ho started the runway schedule as a veteran fashion week exhibitionist, the second runway show was a first time debut. Seventh Wonderland proved themselves to be a label that will be long remembered for the stunning swimwear in their Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

Carly Hunter, Guanabana Designs, Story By Tang and Uscari all followed in the women’s ready-to-wear show

Following the women’s ready-to-wear was more ready-to-wear, but this time, it was coming from New Zealand. Zambesi showed a runway which made spectators sigh for a Summer far-away.

_VIC1913

Rachel Gilbert and Bassike were also first timers on the Rosemount Sydney Fashion Week runways.

As the afternoon wore on, experienced exhibitioners Bec & Bridge and Aurelio Costarella brought the events at the Circular Quay to a close.

North Bondi Ocean Swim 2010

North Bondi Ocean Swim 2010

North Bondi Ocean Swim 10 Jan 10-5676“Perfect” was the only word that could describe the conditions on Bondi Beach on Sunday 10th January. Bright and early on this day, hundreds of swimmers made the effort to swim almost 2kms around the Bondi Ocean Swim course.
The swimmers wore everything from budgie-smugglers to body-steamer wetsuits but the warm water made the former the most appropriate. Competitors of all ages and both sexes took part alongside each other.

Despite the fact that moored boats and ocean currents set up obstacles for the swimmers, the scorching sun was not the only thing to warm this day, the vibes of unity and good sportsmanship also were shining down on all the people involved in the 2010 Bondi Ocean Swim.

OCEAN SWIM: Island Challenge – Coogee

OCEAN SWIM: Island Challenge – Coogee

November 29th was the second last day of Spring, and the day that a great Summer sport descended on Coogee Beach.

Hundreds of men and women took part in the The Coogee Island Challenge open water swimming event for 2009. This open water swim happened in the early morning and involved competitors covering a distance of over 2000 meters.

The 2009 Coogee Island Challenge was given a shot-point start by Peter Garret, MP and environmentalist. Less welcome guests at the Island Challenge swim were a school of jellyfish, which were floating to greet the swimmers at the end of the race.

Despite the jellyfish, there was no menace of cold waters or unpleasant weather which turned Coogee beach into the perfect setting for a perfect day of open water swimming.

Agua Bendita: Scorching Latino Swimwear For Summer 2009

Agua Bendita: Scorching Latino Swimwear For Summer 2009

Agua de Olas

Agua de Olas

A hot summer requires an equally scorching swimsuit and nobody does hotter swim wear than Agua Bendita.

This Latin American brand has finally reached Australian stores and their outrageous designs and playful concept are a perfect match for the sassy and carefree Australian woman.

Agua Bendita was founded in 2003 by Catalina Alvarez and Mariana Hinestroza, who remain the owners and designers of the brand. The label employs the use of vibrant, shimmering and high quality fabrics; a diverse range of colours and textures; and interesting and largely handmade embellishments to produce sexy but feminine swimwear for the modern, sophisticated woman.

Agua de Hadas

Agua de Hadas

Their 2009 collection is entitled Alusina Melusina, or the Fairy Melusina. In European folklore, Melusina is the spirit of fresh water who lives in sacred rivers. Half human, half mermaid, she is referred to as a strong, resilient goddess – a perfect comparison to the water loving, strong women for whom this collection is dedicated.

Agua de Rositas

Agua de Rositas

Lust haves from the Alusina Melusina collection include the gorgeously girly Agua de Rositas bikini with colourful floral detailing and the Agua de Hadas bikini in fluorescent patchwork. The cut-out one piece is huge this summer and Agua Bendita provides with their piece de resistance, the Ague de Monte, a wild and sexy swimsuit in an outrageous tribal floral print.

Need further convincing? Then check out Agua Bendita’s spread in the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimwear edition – with Victoria’s Secret Angel Marissa Miller and supermodel (and former Leonardo DiCaprio fling) Bar Rafaeli modelling these fierce designs, the labels inclusion in the iconic swimwear edition is a clear indication that this brand is white hot.
Also offering accessories and a limited range of clothing, Agua Bendita is the must have brand for the beach this summer.

Easton Pearson Australian Storytelling Through Threads

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Easton Pearson Australian Storytelling Through Threads

EP6It is not often that a designer label is regarded as a cultural landmark. The title of ‘landmark’ is often an honour to be earned through construction of great architectural feats, museums of grandeur and sites of historical or spiritual significance. So it hardly seems fitting to categorise the designs of Easton Pearson as historically significant or anything remotely resembling a cultural landmark. EP5However, consider this. The ultimate guardian of cultural heritage is often the nation-state and yet, many remnants of the past are threatened by neglect and the fear of crippling under the pressure of the market, as office spaces and skyscrapers replace ancestral tombs and historic buildings. A prime example was the 2008 refurbishment (read ‘semi-demolition’) of the Brisbane Regent Theatre, a heritage landmark, to accommodate for a 38-storey office building. It follows that, if the people of Brisbane cannot trust their state to maintain anything other than a historical facade and a grand staircase or two, who can be entrusted to protect our cultural heritage? The answer is simple – you, the people.

EP4The design house of Easton Pearson, founded in March 1989 and headed by Lydia Pearson and Pamela Easton, plays a significant role in the cultural make-up of Brisbane, its people and its approach to style. The designers behind Easton Pearson do not design clothes. They design an interface between historic and modern influences, they merge eclectic textiles from varied cultural terrains and most importantly, they tell a story. It is said that there is something particularly devastating about destroying a library during a war. This is because a library stands not just as a historical monument and centre of knowledge, but more than that, it houses memories, remnants of people’s lives and bound volumes of physical proof that a culture and people once existed there. Buildings however, are easily destroyed. This is why a good storyteller is invaluable.

EP3Easton Pearson’s designs tell a tale of a city. Yet, the stories are not about the city. They are about the individual components that make up the city or place – namely its people, their approach to culture and what they can teach us about the past.

To celebrate the retrospective of Easton Pearson, a showing of selected designs will be exhibited in the Brisbane Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) until November 8th 2009, as part of their 20th anniversary celebrations. On display, eclectic chemise blouses in soft cotton and silk fabrics inspire the mind to wander towards the rich ethnography of Eastern Europe. Linen, hemp, wool and silk homespun fabrics were often woven together in places such a Romania and Moldavia. The exuberant gypsy culture of Eastern Europe is thought to be long forgotten or at best marginalised to the fringe of mainstream society. EP2Yet the latest obsession in the cultural epicentre that is Paris, city of light, is far removed from couture, soft Debussy tunes and Louvre exhibits. One only needs to visit the trendy neighbourhood of Pigalle, where the crowds once swung to the can-can beats of the Moulin Rouge, to see the transformed neighbourhood of swinging skirts and barefoot dancers tapping their feet to the latest Balkan folk tunes of Franco-Italian DJ, Tagada. Easton Pearson pays homage to this historic ethnic trend and reinvents the rich colours, patterns and free-flowing designs for the cultural melting pot that is the modern Australian consumer market.

The designers, Lydia and Pamela, draw further inspiration from their travels. The distinct brand, ‘Isles of the Pacific’, is embroidered on one particularly eclectic dress. The dress is made of pliable fabric, a soft fibre cloth showcasing mangrove plants, frigate birds flying through the coconut trees and villagers scraping coconut meat to create ‘lolo’, the coconut cream. Easton Pearson portrays the rich island culture of Fiji in playful patterns that create movement and juxtapose the labour of the fishermen with the tranquillity of birds, coconut trees and soft waves as they encroach the shoreline. Easton Pearson understands that bright design patterns are not merely a beautiful interface; they are patterns of great cultural pride. In Fiji, soft ‘tapa’ clothes derived from fibrous masi cloth are generally made from natural materials, such as mangrove plants infused with candlenut bark and burnt tree resin of the dakua tree. It was a matter of ancient village pride for the women to weave the tapa cloth with rich textures, colours and cultural references to family lines and village honour. Easton Pearson have followed the design motif and inspiration of Australia’s island neighbours to create a vivid pattern which tells a story of island life and beach culture – a story that resonates only too well with sunny Queenslanders.EP1

The designs of Easton Pearson embody the cultural diversity of modern Australia. Leaving the sandy beaches of Fiji and travelling across the Orient of the East, Easton Pearson invites the Australian consumer on a journey across lotus country. Japanese people have always harboured a strong appreciation of nature and flowers. Across China and Korea, were Buddhism is a prominent religion; the lotus flower, in particular, is used to represent the life of Buddha. It is theorised that the ever-lasting lotus flower is an embodiment of Buddha, who grew out of the darkness of society to become truthful, serene and immortal. A stunning maxi-dress, entwined with a bow tied loosely at the back, is infused with rich tie-dyed textures of floral lotus patterns, interwoven together on soft, loose fabrics that entice the wearer to embrace a deep respect for nature. There is something magnificent about the serenity of our natural environment and a keen appreciation for land is not foreign to Australian consumers. We are a nation of people who pride ourselves on the majestic beauty of the Daintree Rainforest and yet find an equal allure to the sunburnt outback and harsh terrain of the desert plains. Easton Pearson’s cascading dress stands as a reminder of Australians’ strong link to nature and as an enduring symbol of the beauty of simplicity. In a world where designers are turning out increasingly ‘edgy’ designs, severe symmetrical patterns and killer heels, it’s nice to know that women can take comfort in fluid, natural patterns that drape across their bodies and serve only to flatter their femininity, not to constrain or attempt to redefine it.

Easton Pearson is a design house du jour that beautifully restores subdued ethnic pride, a respect for texture and design as a symbol of cultural heritage and a deep appreciation of how design elements interact within a cultural landscape. The well-respected brand of Lydia Pearson and Pamela Easton is an icon of Brisbane and yet, it would be remiss to suggest that this is because the brand represents the women of Brisbane. No. The brand represents women of diverse cultural influences and mixed ideologies, most of whom happen to live in Brisbane.
