Queensland Triumphs At 2009 Short Course Championships

The Queensland state swim team has carved out a piece of history by winning the inaugural State Team Short Course Championships in a decisive fashion.

Queensland came in at first place with a total of 2505 points, while New South Wales won second place, scoring 2346 points.

Third place was won by Victoria, with a total of 1515 points.

The 2009 State Team Short Course Championships took place at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from the 19th to the 21st of September.

The Short Course Championships consisted of four sessions held over three days, with two session held on the 20th of September.

A number of skins races were held as well as timed finals during this competition.

Queensland put in a commanding performance throughout all four sessions of the championships, and by the end of the first day of competition they had established a 56 point lead over New South Wales, who finished the first day in second place.

As well as winning the championships, Queensland won best performing female team for girls aged between 13-14 and 15-16.

Additionally, Queensland received awards for the best performing male team overall and the best performing female team overall.

Queensland was also presented with awards for best team performance based on points per swimmer and best team performance outright.

New South Wales received awards for best performing male team for boys aged between 14-15 and 16-17.

Kenneth To, a 17 year old from New South Wales, was one of the stars of the championships, accomplishing the remarkable feat of winning four events in a row on the last day of competition.

To won the 50 metre freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly in the boy’s 16-17 group on the 21st of September.

To’s win in the 50 metre breaststroke was particularly thrilling, as he managed to defeat Queensland’s Nicholas Schafer by just 0.02 seconds.

More than 200 athletes aged between 13 to 17 from across the country took part in championships, which consisted of 76 races held in the short course format.

Mercedes-Benz 2010 Swim Fashion Week Miami

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Mercedes-Benz 2010 Swim Fashion Week Miami

Hot wheels and hot designs were on display as the annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2010 took centre stage in Miami. More than 12 thousand people attended the five day extravaganza as scantily clad models strutted down the catwalk showcasing the hottest looks and trends for summer.

Local designer Red Carter delighted the audience with his space-age glamour that included multi-coloured bikinis with gold hardware and structured cuts with mesmerising prints.

The season’s ‘Mercedes-Benz Presents’ designer L*Space by Monica Wise featured tasty bikinis in stunning fabrics with a gorgeous mix of African-inspired prints.
The unique colour of olive green and grey was seen repetitively in the swimwear range which generates a blend of chic modernity into the ageless art-deco environment. This olivine grey was also displayed as one of the colours on the new E-Class Mercedes-Benz coupe at the show.

“Fashion designers share a common thread with automotive designers and that realization comes to life at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Both the vehicles and the garments consistently reflect fashion trends, movements and craftsmanship”, said Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion, Fern Mallis.

Bohéme Boutiques commenced their poolside show with bohemian-inspired garments such as bikinis, beach cover-ups, one-piece swimsuits and scarves in bright colours and prints. With all the essentials covered that would make anyone look stunning at the beach, the collection integrated belted buckle detailing and energetic colours on one-piece swimwear, scarves and bikinis with a touch of embroidery.

Caffe Swimwear took a spin to the bohemian look and launched its first “Making A Change” ensembles with creative elements. Channelling its laid back comfort style in a more humanistic approach, designer Paula Saavedra produced high fashion resort collections that are super chic and sexy with an exotic touch.

Clever cuts and form-fitting bikinis were introduced by Tori Praver Swimwear. The fabulous line includes maillots and cover-ups with a hint of romantic pastels of white and cream pieces. Influenced by her travels, Praver’s swimwear designs are sure to make a big splash this summer.

Meanwhile, Cali-inspired brand Ed Hardy Swimwear took a fashion forward approach to its collection with diverse mix of styles, designs, colours and fabrics. The lifestyle focused brand offered a whole range of mix and match separates and unique embellishments encouraged by the sandy beaches and hot weather of the upcoming season.

Taking a more spiritual approach to her designs, Mara Hoffman translated a variety of unique silhouettes and intense prints from bright and bold to femininely softer hues. The swimwear range demonstrated different styles that will help flatter any body shape. This included playful bikinis and super sexy one-pieces accentuated with colour palettes from red, yellow, black, lavender and blue.

Resort collections with an eye for fashion, White Sands Australia featured 80s-inspired glamour with an edgy twist. Cute frilly bandeau bikinis, Brazilian-inspired bottoms, skilfully shaped maillots in rich gelato colours were presented for ready-to-wear beach wear.

White Sands Australia designer Leah Madden offered flawlessly structured shapes and deep plunging neck lines as well as fun and playful swimsuits, t-shirt dress with shimmering sequins and alluring maxi frocks.

Consumers and the media saw other design collections from Marysia Swim, Crystal Jin Eley, Aqua Di Lara and many more. At Poko Pano’s summer 2010 compilation provided colourful polka dots and stripes of tropical colours incorporated with black, white and beige.

The season’s hottest colours comprised of ocean blue, purple and pink as seen at Marysia Swim, Luli Fama, Cia.Maritima and ANK by Mirla Sabino Swimwear shows.

The everlasting colour of black used innovatively with clever styling details were strongly presented at Vitamin A and V Del Sol runway shows consecutively.

Cutesy-classic with the occasional outrageous twist has appeared to be the design motif used by designers when putting together catwalk shows both this year and in years that have passed. This year will prove once again that this keeping more designs steered towards consumer than couture is a fail-proof method to both sell swimwear and impress the crowds at fashion week.

Australian Water Polo: National League Update

_d9r7297 Sydney Olympian Sean Boyd saved face for Drummoyne Devils in their men’s National Water Polo League match against Wests Magpies at Parramatta Pool here yesterday.

Outgoing premiers Wests have no chance of making next month’s finals but rebounded from a sloppy draw with Brisbane Barracudas the day before to clinch a shock 10-all draw with the third-ranked Devils._d9r7257

In fact, Wests grabbed the lead inside the final two minutes only to have Boyd score from centre forward 11 seconds later.

Wests lost their coach and several vital players from last year and haven’t performed anywhere near the level of last year’s historic season.
Drummoyne women also drew their encounter, finishing 9-all with the UNSW Killer Whales.

As with the men, Drummoyne needed to level the game with the equaliser coming from United States import Courtney Mathewson at 4:20 left in the game.

_d9r6995Angela Turnbull was the star for Drummoyne with six goals.
Sydney University Lions men, sitting just outside a finals berth, beat Brisbane Barracudas men 14-6 while the No 3 Barracudas women beat the No 6 Lions 13-8.

In Melbourne, the No 2 Victorian Tigers men dumped Adelaide Jets 16-8 and the No 4 Tigers women came through a high-fouling match against the Jets 17-12. Eleven players had at least two major fouls with two fouled out of the game.

In Perth, the UWA Comets women turned the tables on KFC Queensland Breakers with a 6-5 victory following Friday’s 11-7 loss while the front-charging Breakers men smashed UWA Torpedoes 18-5._d9r6835

Balmoral Ocean Swim For Children’s Cancer

Balmoral Ocean Swim For Children’s Cancer

Balmoral Ocean Swim 2009

This year’s Balmoral Swim attracted over 600 competitors from all over New South Wales. The event, which is held at Balmoral Beach just north of Sydney, has raised money for the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia since 2007.

In 2008, 713 competitors attended, raising over $30,000, and this year the charity has once again made a significant contribution, collecting over $22,000 for the cause so far.

The Alexander Patrick Hall Charity Cup is awarded to the individual and team who raises the most amount of money through the online fund. This year the award goes to team Clubaces, who have raised an astounding $13,863 to date, more than half of the total contribution. Nicholas Anderson was also recognised for his individual contribution of $2,145.

Several other awards and prizes are handed out to the winners of each race. The programme consists of a team relay, a 250m juniors team race, as well as a 150m open Dash for Glory.

But the curtain raiser for the event, the one kilometre race, was the main attraction. The long-distance harbour swim encouraged 602 starters to take to the chilled waters at 10am last Friday.  Eighteen-year-old Jake Nolan of Beacon Hill took out the race in just under 12 minutes. Kelly McCrae was the fastest of the women finishing in 8th place overall.

The Balmoral Beach Club, in co-operation with the Mosman council will be looking for an increased number of competitors and donators when the event is held once again next year.

The University of New South Wales Killer Whales claimed a big scalp in Cronulla Sharks in their women’s National Water Polo League match a the UNSW Pool here last night.

By controlling the second half and going 7-5 ahead inside the last minute, the eighth-ranked Killer Whales only gave up one goal 23 seconds from time against the No 4 Sharks.

Boasting two Olympians each with the Killer Whales fielding Chinese stars Liu Ping and He Jin, the match was dominated by the two goalkeepers — Lea Barta for UNSW and Olympian Alicia McCormack for Cronulla.

Cronulla, playing without Olympian Mia Santoromito, led 2-1 in the first period but slipped 4-3 behind at halftime while levelling the third 1-all and the last 2-all.
Nicola Zagame pushed her season tally to a competition-high 46 goals with another four — three in the second half.
Cronulla men didn’t seem to turn up to play, losing 18-3 to Wests Magpies at Ashfield with youngster Paul Sindone claiming six goals.
At Balmain’s Dawn Fraser Pool, Balmain Tigers women shrugged off a valiant Sydney University Lions team 9-7 with the game being locked at 6-all late in the third and 7-all early in the fourth.

Balmain men beat the Lions 10-5 in a low-fouling game where the Lions’ 4-3 halftime lead was squashed in the third period as Balmain rammed in four unanswered goals.

In Brisbane, KFC Queensland Breakers men struck a huge blow against Drummoyne Devils, winning 10-3 in this top-of-the-table clash, boosted by a 4-0 lead midway through the second period.

The Breakers women had it a little tougher with a 12-8 margin thanks to three-goal hauls by Kate Miller and Sophie Smith.
In Perth, reigning premiers Longmont Fremantle Marlins repulsed the Hunter Hurricanes women 14-8 while the four-time champion Fremantle Mariners men allowed two late goals for Hunter to come close at 9-7.

Water Polo: National League Update

Drummoyne Devils v Hunter Hurricanes

Drummoyne Devils v Hunter Hurricanes

Hunter Hurricanes were cruelly denied victory, losing 11-10 to Balmain Tigers in a men’s National Water Polo League match at the Dawn Fraser Pool here yesterday.

At 9-6 up early in the final quarter, the Hurricanes supporters were prematurely celebrating victory but watched as the margin was whittled to 9-8 and then 10-9 inside the final two minutes.

When Daniel Robinson was ejected at 1:29, Balmain called a timeout, worked out a strategy and then passed the ball for 20 seconds before James Falzon scored his second goal for 10-10.

Balmain called another timeout and the ploy was to get another ejection, Robinson again, to set up an extra-man play and score, which Falzon did 17 seconds from time for 11-10.

Man-of-the-match goalkeeper Angus Crowley could not stop the winner in a game where Hunter only took the lead at 3:31 left in the third period.

Balmain women beat Hunter 12-8 after leading 7-3 at halftime.

Drummoyne Devils’ fly-in recruit from Perth, Tim Cleland, was evicted from the game against Sydney University Lions late in the third quarter for back-chatting the referee.

The Devils won 15-11 for a 9-1 season and level pegging with the KFC Queensland Breakers on the ladder.
The fifth-ranked Lions women beat the seventh-ranked Devils 13-8 with Mel Hammond (Sydney Uni) and Ashleigh Southern (Drummoyne) topping the scoring with four each.

At the University of Wollongong, KFC Breakers women held off Cronulla Sharks 5-4 thanks to an Ellie Bowden goal just inside the last two minutes. The Breakers men blitzed Cronulla 21-2 with Tom Knox claiming six goals.

In Perth, Brisbane Barracudas men came from 6-5 down at three-quarter time to defeat UWA Torpedoes 9-6 while the Barracudas women bounced UWA Comets 13-8.

Triathlon: 2009 Gold Coast ITU Oceania Championships- Kahlefeldt’s Triumphant Return

Brad Kahlefeldt crosses the finish line

Brad Kahlefeldt crosses the finish line

Beijing Olympian Brad Kahlefeldt led home an Australian clean sweep in his first race in five months at the 2009 Gold Coast Triathlon Oceania Championships.

Kahlefeldt edged out Beijing team mate Courtney Atkinson, who recently won the Australian Sprint title and rising star Dan Wilson with Japan’s Kiyomi Niwata taking the women’s crown ahead of Switzerland’s Daniela Ryf and Chilean Barbara Riveros. Kahlefeldt said he was delighted with the fast and furious course raced today which will be the same use for the 2009 Gold Coast ITU World Triathlon Championships in September.

Kahlefeldt is unbeaten on this course, with four wins and must give him a huge confidence boost ahead of the World Championships.

Early race leader Clayton Fettell lead off the front of the bike for the entire 40km and headed into the run with a 45 second lead from the chase group of 45. But after the first lap of the run the heat had decimated the field and it was the Australian trio Kahlefeldt, Atkinson, Wilson and the UK’s Stuart Hayes that broke away. Hayes was first to lose touch. Kahlefeldt turned up the intensity in the final lap which no one could match to take an easy victory in the end.

In the ITU Australian Junior Oceania Championships Courtney Dutton and New Zealand’s Jos Hoetjes put in commanding performances.

The win handed Dutton the final spot on the Australian female junior team to contest the World Championships on the Gold Coast in September along with team mates Holly Aitken and Emma Jackson.

New Zealand junior champion, Hoetjes continued his outstanding season following his bronze at the recent Australian Youth Olympics and victories in local races in New Zealand to also add the Oceania title to his resume.

Dutton has been a consistent performer this season, featuring in the silver medal winning team at the Australian Youth Olympics. Dutton handled the pressure and conditions like a seasoned professional despite having to run down the Australian Youth Olympics gold medallist Aitken over the 5km to secure victory. Another emerging talent Victorian Jaimi Chisholm recorded one of her best results finishing third.

The Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial was first on the racing agenda. Approximately 2500 athletes competed in one of the three distances on offer; Sprint (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run); Enticer (300m swim, 10km cycle, 2km run); and The Courier Mail Superkidz Triathlon.

Age Group competiotors were racing to secure a spot on the Australian team to compete at the 2009 Gold Coast ITU Triathlon World Championships. Nerang’s Risa Saito made the most of the perfect early conditions, coming home in 1hr, 3min, 53secs. The fastest male home was Paul Wiedersehn in 58min,24secs.

Swim Fashion Week: Highlights From The Gold Coast Runways

Swim Fashion Week: Highlights From The Gold Coast Runways

In sub-tropical Sanctuary Cove, on Wednesday 25th February, at the leisurely time of 2pm, Swim Fashion Week kicked off an explosive start with the Designers Suite display.

The Designer Suite display, held at the Park Hyatt Hotel was an exclusive event- accessible by appointment only- which showed off the cream of Australian Swimwear. The highly ranked list of designers showing their wares included: AmandaDarling, Anna & Boy, Beach Brasil, Ed Hardy & Christian Audiger, Hotel Bondi Swim, Jets, Lisa Blue and Zimmerman.

So many designers packed in to one venue created a hectic atmosphere; although the calibre of the event ensured that guests got the smooth-running afternoon that they expected.
Designer Suite’s and Designer Pavilions were held on every day of Swim Fashion Week. These events served as an exclusive preview of the new season trends before they were shown before the masses on the runways.

Zimmermann: Day 1, Swim Fashion Week

Zimmermann: Day 1, Swim Fashion Week

Day one was a frantic day for Zimmerman designers. After already putting on an impressive showcase at the Hyatt, Zimmermann impressed catwalk observers with their signature frills and quirky prints. The distinction of the 09’ Zimmerman design is the minimalism of the cruise collection- ruffled white fabrics offset by intricacies of blue and twists of earthy colours which are sure to be loved by consumers and maintain Zimmerman’s place at the top of the luxury swimwear list.

Day two, on Thursday 26th February, included shows from White Sands, Lisa Blue and Hotel Bondi Swim.
One of the reasons that Swim Fashion Week has been hailed as such a success in the fashion industry was the fact that all runway shows on each day had been confined to no more than one event on one day- putting a halt to frenzied sprints between events.

The catwalk looks on day two all held in common the relaxed, beachy vibe that is synonymous with Australian resort wear.

Seventh Wonderland: Day 2, Swim Fashion Week.

Seventh Wonderland: Day 2, Swim Fashion Week.

Seventh Wonderland is a brand famed for epitomizing youthful sass, and it stayed true to reputation at Swim Fashion Week. All the designs gave impressions of lazy Bondi afternoons or morning frolics on Manly beach. The patterns on the fine-quality fabric were bold and verging on psychedelic- a certain hit with wearers.

Hotel Bondi Swim: Day 2, Swim Fashion Week.

Hotel Bondi Swim: Day 2, Swim Fashion Week.

Hotel Bondi also trotted the runways on day two of Swim Fashion Week; the bikinis were minimal in composition- with patterns loud and extremely colourful, not unlike the view from any of the hip bars along the Bondi promenade.

Day three: Friday 27th February heralded the Watersun catwalk show which started at 4pm. Watersun designs were not as noisy as others seen during Swim Fashion Week. But that is not to say the designs could be described as simple. The mantra of the collection resonated on the catwalk: “designed for women who love being women- a collection of super sexy, seductive swimwear as a true celebration of the female form.”

Following the Watersun display Ed Hardy & Christian Audiger showed their trademark nautical nostalgia. This was sharply contrast by the modern, romantic splendour that Anna & Boy is known for. Amada Darling concluded day three- it was obvious in this collection the way the designers valued youth and fun in their creations.

Watersun: Day 3, Swim Fashion Week

Watersun: Day 3, Swim Fashion Week

Saturday 28th of February was the final day of Swim Fashion Week; it was also the final day of Summer. And while Summer was dying- New designers were celebrating their birth on to the swimwear fashion scene. The focus was on the “New Generation” with creations springing out of the local Gold Coast Beaches, Byron Bay and Brisbane.

Karen Neilsen’s (of Gold Coast locality) collection named At The Entrance was one of the highlights of the day, with each piece reminding audiences of celebrating Summer holidays on the Australian East Coast. Byron Bay locals, Iniki threaded nostalgic naturality of the Byron Bay of old through their collections, making viewers want to time-warp back to the days before high-rise hotels and day-spas.

The exclusive island location and the professional industry atmosphere at Swim Fashion week could be summed up as delightfully different from other similar events run by IMG: while there was plenty to see and a load of exciting trends on show, the catwalk presentations echoed a relaxed, oh-so-cool and sleek vibe- just the way swimwear and resort wear is intended to be seen.

N.S.W Surf Life Saving Championships: Lucky Shore Break for Simpson Brothers

N.S.W Surf Life Saving Championships: Lucky Shore Break for Simpson Brothers

Cronulla’s Allum brothers thought they had today’s Open Male Board Rescue final in the bag until rival club mates, the Simpson brothers, cleverly held back to await a lucky shore wave that catapulted them into the gold medal position.NSW Surf lifesaving Championships 2009 - Blacksmiths Beach

Defending champion Mark Simpson, 24, was the swimmer in the rescue simulation event and younger brother Dean Simpson, 21, rode the board. Once Mark was retrieved the Simpson brothers chased Chris and Hayden Allum all the way to the beach until Dean spotted the winning ride.

“I saw a wave coming and told Mark to wait, that’s what got us past them,” he said grinning.

Chris Allum was clearly frustrated at the late loss. “We had that race in the bag, but that’s part of the sport. It’s dead flat then a one foot wave appears right there….it’s funny how it happens sometimes.”

The Simpson and the Allum brothers train together at Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club and are friends, “but not on the line,” admitted Chris Allum.090229-nsw-surf-lifesaving-championships-2009-1008

From today’s result he did take away some solace. Mark Simpson won this event last year, with a different partner, and two years ago the Simpson brothers won the national title. “To be in front of them makes me feel like we are in with a shot in Perth,” Chris Allum added, referring to the upcoming national titles in less than three weeks time.

Today’s gold medal was the third this state carnival for Mark Simpson who combined with the Allum brothers and Cameron Pyett yesterday in the Surf Team and with Hayden in the Open Mens Board Relay.

His training might have suffered in previous months due to work commitments but Mark’s happy to take the psychological advantage heading into tomorrow’s string of individual finals including the Swim, Board and the blue ribbon event, the Open Ironman.

In the Open Female Board Rescue Terrigal stormed home, a big turnaround from last year when the team failed to qualify for the finals at the state championship. Only their second time on a board together this season, 25 year old Amanda White, the defending national champion, and Joanna Baxter, a 17 year old St Josephs High School student, “just clicked”.

Baxter was also part of the winning Terrigal team in the Under 19 Female Surf Team final, combining with Erin Robertson and two Under 17 swimmers, Jorden Burnes and Rachelle King.

Conditions were calm again for day two of the 2009 Allphones Open NSW Surf Life Saving Championships with a dumping shore break, light winds and flat seas under a strong sun on the final day of summer.090229-nsw-surf-lifesaving-championships-2009-1003090229-nsw-surf-lifesaving-championships-2009-1002090229-nsw-surf-lifesaving-championships-2009-1001

This evening will be a quiet affair for the Open competitors who have qualified for a finals berth tomorrow. The competition will get underway at 8am in the morning before the traditional March Past at 11am when the 2008 NSW Surf Lifesaver and Volunteer of the Year will be announced.

The carnival’s closing events promise a thrilling afternoon of water and beach finals climaxing with the pinnacle, the Open Ironman and Ironwoman.

Host Club Swansea Belmont rose to second place in the overall pointscore today.

Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman Series: Smashing Success For Alyce & Shannon At Wild Coolum

Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman Series: Smashing Success For Alyce & Shannon At Wild Coolum

Alyce Bennett and Shannon Eckstein emerged from a day of wild surf, broken craft and injuries as the winners in round three of the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman Series at Coolum Beach today.

Competitors had their bravery and skill tested as never before in pounding two metre surf that turned the water into a washing machine and left the best surf lifesavers in the country waterlogged and washed out.

While Eckstein (Telstra Southern Qld Sunfish) showed freakish surfing skills to recover from problems in the ski and board legs, the crashing waves were particularly tough on the female competitors whose scheduled 25-minute race took twice that long to complete.

In a true test of survival, Bennett, competing for the Express Glass Southern NSW Blue Fins, proved herself the fittest, winning by a massive six minutes from current Australian Ironwoman champion Alicia Marriott (Jeep Western Waves) and Allira Richardson (Citizen North Qld Lightning).

Bennett said the conditions were the toughest she had ever encountered.

Her closest rival for much of the race, Hayley Bateup (DHL Southern Ice), was forced out when her board was snapped clean in half by a pounding wave during the final leg and came crashing down on the back of her neck, leaving her dazed.

“Coolum always puts on a good wave so it’s a great spot to have it, good for racing,” Bennett said.

“What happened to Hayley shows the power that the waves had and it was a matter of who was in the best position getting the breaks.

“I was side by side with Hayley and while she rolled under the wave I waited a bit and the wave snapped her board clean in half.”

For Bennett, who hails from Yamba on the NSW North Coast, today’s victory was the biggest of her career.

“This is my first win in the Kellogg’s series,” she said.

“I also had a win last weekend when I started racing with a new board that is the first one I’ve had away from the colour scheme that I’ve used for the past seven years and it must be my lucky board.”

Bennett paid tribute to the advice her coach, Wes Berg, passed on just before the start of the race.

“He had been watching the surf all morning and he told me there were two rips running, one in the north and one in the south, but that the southern one was much more consistent,” she said.

“He said go to the south every time and it worked.”

The consensus among the female competitors was that the race was one of the two or three toughest they had ever contested.

Runner-up Marriott, who edged out Richardson in a sprint finish and is starting return to the form that saw he win last year’s national Ironwoman crown, said the conditions made it impossible to know where you were in the race.

“I was quite nervous going into the race because back home (in Perth) the conditions have been dead flat,” she said.

“At Kurrawa in rounds one and two my surf skills were a bit off and I didn’t know how I was going to go here but I pulled out a big race.

Richardson said that despite the physical toll taken in the tough conditions, the mental battle was just as hard.

“I was out there on the ski thinking ‘why am I doing this to myself’ but you’ve just got to keep at it and hope a break will come and power on through when you get that break,” she said.

“It was definitely one of the toughest races we have done, last year at Kurrawa was similar conditions, it’s a washing machine out there.”

Another to fare well in the testing surf was Courtney Hancock (Inner Health Plus Northern NSW Hammers) who finished fourth ahead of brave efforts by Chloe Jones (Lightning) in fifth, Kirsten Ulmer (Ice) sixth, Gemma Newbiggin (Lightning) seventh and Chelsea Mackenzie eighth.

The day was particularly difficult for the series leaders going into round three, Kristyl Smith (Blue Fins), Naomi Flood (Hammers) and Terri Sullivan (Sunfish).

Smith was shown no mercy by the surfing gods after leading through the first half of the opening swim leg.

She was smashed by wave after wave on the ski and was still trying to complete the course more than 90 minutes after the start.

Flood fared little better and finished in 13th place, while Sullivan was stung by a bluebottle before the race and again in the swim and was forced to retire.

Despite her difficulties, Smith still leads the Ironwoman series on 40 points ahead of Flood on 39 while Bennett’s win elevated her to third place on 36 points.

Three-time Series winner Shannon Eckstein overcame a cracked ski and a tumble off his board to beat arch-rival and Sunfish teammate Zane Holmes in a thrilling and unpredictable Kellogg’s Ironman race at Coolum today.

Eckstein’s damaged ski filled with water, making it impossible to steer, and then when he came off his board within sight of the finish and while just metres ahead of Holmes he miraculously bodysurfed the same wave that caused him to crash, to open up a winning 10 metre break.

“I was trying to get away from Zane because I didn’t want a sprint up the beach but I couldn’t,” Eckstein said. “Catching that wave after I fell was a miracle.

“I couldn’t really see where I was going because of the spray but I knew if I didn’t go for the wave, Zane would win so it was over or nothing.”

Eckstein is the master tactician and knew that he had to be careful how he approached today’s race.

“When the surf’s up it’s just about being smart,” he said.

“Sometimes you can’t just sprint out, you have to stop and wait. If there are three waves coming, you stop and wait for three waves.

“If someone catches up there is not much you can do about it so it’s about being smart, picking the right spot every time and just going for it with your instinct.

“You can’t paddle through waves, no-one can.”

Eckstein has been battling a back injury and needed a cortisone injection to get to the start line today.

Former national Ironman champion Nathan Smith (Blue Fins) finished third today, with Luke Nisbet (Waves) improving on his previous efforts to place fourth and beat home Hugh Dougherty (Hammers) fifth, Matt Poole (Hammers) sixth, Corey Jones (Lightning) seventh and Berg (Blue Fins) eighth.

Eckstein (53 points) now has a two-point lead over Holmes in the Ironman series, with Poole (Lightning) third on 41.

The board rescue and Taplin relay events scheduled for today were cancelled because of the conditions, with Surf Life Saving Australia General Manager of Surf Sports, Grant Baldock, saying he expected a full program to be raced tomorrow when the Ironmen and Ironwomen compete in a two-race elimination format.

Water Polo: Champion Wests Lose Opening National Leauge Encounter

Wests Magpies began their defence of the men’s National Water Polo League crown in rusty fashion with a 14-10 loss to Victorian Tigers at the University of New South Wales last night.

Despite a 2-0 lead, Wests had lost the advantage by quarter time and always had to play catch-up, only twice coming within a goal in the last three periods.

For the Tigers it was back to winning after a draw with Hunter Hurricanes the night before and it saw the Tigers’ United States import, Miles Price, to the fore with four goals.

The Tigers women suffered their first defeat in three matches against a spirited UNSW Killer Whales outfit, going down 13-8.

The supreme efforts of goalkeeper Lea Barta and five-goal heroine Ali Gronow put paid to the Tigers’ game plan. For Gronow it was bittersweet, scoring against her former club for the first time.

In Brisbane, the KFC Breakers racked up two wins over the Adelaide Jets with the men romping home 15-5 and the women 12-10.

In the women’s encounter, Sydney Olympic gold medallist Naomi McCarthy scored three goals in a comeback to the NWPL for the Breakers while Adelaide’s goals came from eight different players.
