Eckstein (Northcliffe) and Marriott (Mooloolaba) emerged from the energy-sapping, hot conditions to claim the overall titles in the $250,000 series.

Eckstein, the defending champion, won a furious sprint to the finish ahead of his nearest challenger in the series, Hugh Dougherty, to secure a comfortable eight-point margin in the series pointscore.

Corey Jones (Metropolitan Caloundra), who was inches away from being eliminated in the first race of today’s three-race ‘Eliminator’ format, pulled out his best performance of the season to place third.

Olympic swimmer Ky Hurst (Kurrawa) capped his return to Ironman racing with fifth place in the final and third overall in the series behind Eckstein and Dougherty.

David Jones Autumn/Winter 2010 Season Launch

David Jones Autumn/Winter 2010 Season Launch

Akira, Alex Perry, Alannah Hill, Anna Thomas, AG by Arthur Galan, Bianca Spender, Calibre, Carla Zampatti, Collette Dinnigan, Easton Pearson, Fleur Wood, George Gross, Ginger & Smart, Gorman, Harry Who, Kirrily Johnston, Lisa Ho, Sabatini, Sass & Bide, Scanlan & Theodore, Simona, Thurley, Trelise Cooper, Willow and Zimmermann were all seen on the catwalks of the David Jones Autumn/Winter 2010 Season Launch.

Australian model Miranda Kerr lead the catwalk parade before an audience of more than 500 VIPs at the Hordern Pavilion on February 10th.

The unveiling of the David Jones range started with black. The pavilion was plunged into darkness before the sleek David Jones logo was lit up to shine down on the catwalk. Miss Kerr began the show, also in black. The next few minutes were all about black but before too long indigo blues and fire-engine reds were seen sauntering down the catwalk.

Although the lighting in the pavilion was kept dark and uninteresting the clothing was used to maintain intrigue from the audience. Kelvin Harries, stylist for the show , should be commended for his way of purposefully dictating the trends for the season.

Autumn/Winter 2010 is all about black, white or cream with a brightly coloured or metallic contrast piece.

To say that nothing was simple or basic on the catwalk would be incorrect. Basics were teamed from head to toe on the models with new life drawn into them through texture and often a single statement colour in an all-black outfit.

Vibrant patterns are always unusual for an Autumn/Winter collection. There was no floral to be seen. Instead, metalics and tiny brass beads were used to embellish necklines and waistlines. On every model it was clear that the collections were all about the flow of the fabric and the attitude of the individual who wore them.

The female models had their hair cut short, and the male models were put together with precision – every trouser, every tie and every jacket on the men was co-ordinated and matching. The only exception to this rule was the statement piece which was a reoccurring motif throughout the show.

The catwalk show played through for the best part of a half an hour and all this time the message was drilled into the crowd: keep your outfit simple with the exception of a statement or two.

Blue Ribbon Event Decides the NSW Age Surf Life Saving Championships

Blue Ribbon Event Decides the NSW Age Surf Life Saving Championships

1200 - -70451200 - -7071Blue ribbon event decided at the NSW Age Surf Life Saving Championships

Pittwater House student Jayke Rees is the new Under 14 State Ironman thanks to a winning performance in the blue ribbon event at the 2010 NSW Age Surf Life Saving Championships staged over the weekend at Blacksmiths Beach in the Hunter.

Rees has never placed in the Ironman event at state level before, making today’s victory at Swansea Belmont even sweeter for the Warriewood SLSC member who has been a nipper since he was seven.

After a strong swim that saw him push through the green water to reach the turning cans in second place behind Coogee’s Ben Thornton, Rees hit the front of the field. He was first to his board for the final leg of the two stage event and never sacrificed his hard-fought advantage.

Rees ran unperturbed over the top of a blue bottle second time around the cans as he paddled furiously to catch the final winning wave to the beach, all the time looking over his shoulder at the chasing pack led by Thornton.

“I just tried my best” said the fourteen year old who spends most weekends at the beach and is also a NSW schools swimming rep. “Conditions this weekend were challenging with big surf and waves coming from all directions,” he acknowledged.

Rees also took out the Under 14 Male Board event on what was a perfect summer’s day at Blacksmiths Beach with plenty of sunshine and a light nor’easterly sea breeze blowing onshore.

Terrigal’s Karlee Nurthen admitted that by the time she pipped the rest if the field in the Under 14 Ironwoman event she was pretty exhausted. Three days of tough competition tested the four time previous winner who stretched her lead by the board leg and caught a final wave to the beach to beat her nearest rival, Danielle McMahon from Wanda.

“My plan was to stick on Georgia’s [Miller] wash and hope to get past her,” said Nurthen.

Preferring the paddle leg of the Ironwoman event to the swim, Nurthen saved her best for last, powering home to take gold for her Central Coast club.

Karlee’s older sister Amy is a Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironwoman and Karlee is well on the way to emulating her sister’s success. Following a gold winning performance this morning in the Under 14 Board finals there were high hopes for Freshwater’s Georgia Miller in the Ironwoman event. Miller dominated the swim leg and was first to the boards but as she paddled out through the white water a wave knocked her sideways and she never regained her place.

In the overall pointscore Manly SLSC’s team of 194 juniors has finally ended Cronulla’s 12 year dream run, beating the second placed Wanda by 30 points.

Sita Mason and Lachlan Bruce, Manly’s junior captains, this afternoon spoke about Manly’s state championship pointscore win.
“We feel proud to represent Manly as the captains and to place first at this carnival,” said Mason.

Although she will be moving up to the seniors next year Mason said the younger age groups should be able to maintain Manly’s current form. “The club has put a lot into training the younger age groups and it’s starting to show in the medal count for Manly.”

This year’s state title was the last to be held at Swansea Belmont as part of a three year agreement. Next year’s championship will be held at Cudgen Headland SLSC, Kingscliff, on the far north coast.

BLK1 Model Profile: Pip Bingham

Standing at 182cm, Pip Bingham sure stands out from a crowd. Yet her height isn’t all that attracts ones eye. Her ‘go get em’ Aussie attitude, along with her piercing green eyes, amazing catwalk presence and her legs which reach all the way up to heaven, have all made the world stop and take note. This nineteen year old Perth girl is the look of the future.

l_16d60ad1bd5f4581be3c6bea83e7f4f6

At the age of 13, a less than girly Pip was scouted in a street market in Fremantle, WA. She hesitantly took the scout’s card, but never called. Less than two years later, fate intervened and Pip bumped into the same modelling scout, twice in the same month. With her mum’s encouragement and the hope that modelling would make Pip a little more girly, she attended modelling classes and went on to model for Perth Fashion Week.

l_2bc2add0893e4a978ca28470364e42b6

After success in Perth, Pip signed with Chadwick Models and was discovered by top stylist Trevor Stone. He proceeded to book Pip as his leading girl in all of his Sydney Fashion Week shows. In 2008 she won the Model of The Year award and became prominent in the Australian modelling scene. She was received well by all audiences Australia wide and was successfully taking on an industry which was dominated by blonde, elf like, 15 year olds.

With offers to model in Melbourne, Hong Kong, Greece, Singapore and Milan, Pip recently left a stifling summer in Australia and ventured into sub zero Milan wearing her trademark Aussie denim shorts and singlet.

Her Aussie charm has worked in her favour and since arriving in January, Pip has been flown all over Europe for different jobs. With her high fashion look, Pip Bingham is sure to be a household name by the end of 2010.

WA swimmers set 56 records at 2010 SunSmart State Open Championships

WA swimmers set 56 records at 2010 SunSmart State Open Championships

The 2010 SunSmart State Open Championships, held by Swimming WA at Challenge Stadium from the 27th to the 30th of January, certainly lived up to the hype of being the biggest event on the WA swimming calendar.

56 records were broken by WA athletes at the event, including 38 state records and 18 country records.

200 athletes from 27 teams took part in the Championships.

But for many people, the 2010 SunSmart State Open Championships belonged to Brianna Throssell, a 13 year old superstar in the making from the City of Perth.

Ms Throssell broke 13 state records over the course of the four day competition

Blair Evans, another of the City of Perth’s brightest stars, followed very closely behind Throssell, breaking 12 state records.

In one of the most eagerly anticipated events of this year’s Championships, these two rising stars of the pool went head to head in the Women’s 100m Freestyle on day two.

Much of the excitement surrounding the Women’s 100m Freestyle came from the fact that at the 2010 SunSmart State Age Championships, held in December 2009, both Throssell and Evans achieved the fastest time in the 100m Freestyle ever recorded by a swimmer from WA.

Additionally, Ms Evans is the current holder of the WA All Time Record for the event.

The addition of Adelaide Hart, another very talented young swimmer from Applecross to the Women’s 100m Freestyle only contributed to the excitement and anticipation surrounding the event.

But in the end, it was Evans who triumphed, coming in first place with a time of 55.61.

Hart came in second place with a time of 57.60, and Throssell followed very closely behind her to finish in third place with a time of 57.63

Chelsea Unwin from Riverton Blue Marlins broke 3 state records and Alexander Taylor from Southside Penhros Wesley broke 2 state records.

Ross Hendry from Aquajets broke four records in the Boys 14yrs/U 1500m Freestyle, a record that has stood for eighteen and a half years. Hendry also broke the WA All Time & Residential in the Boys 14yrs/U 800m Freestyle record as a split time whilst completing his 1500m.

Rural WA featured strongly at the Championships, with Adele Schultz and Kate Bird, both of whom are from Bunbury Swimming Club, breaking numerous country records. Schultz broke ten country records and Bird broke eight.

Many of the athletes who took part in the 2010 SunSmart Sate Open Championships now qualify to compete in the 2010 Telstra Australian Open Championships / Commonwealth Trials in Sydney, being held from 15th -21st March 2010.

David Toll, the Executive Director of Swimming WA, said that the SunSmart State Open Championships provides athletes with an excellent chance to showcase their talent.

“This event will be the start for many young swimmers to qualify for the National Championships held in March and is the platform from which our Olympians are discovered. It’s a really exciting time in the sport and we look forward to watching all of our young members pushing themselves onto great achievements” said Mr Toll.

Lacoste Creates An Australian Open Limited Edition

Lacoste Creates An Australian Open Limited Edition

lacoste-logoIn the lead up to the 2010 Australian Open, the first grand slam tennis tournament of the year, Lacoste has announced it will be re-releasing a limited edition of the 101 sunglasses range. 30 years after it’s original conception, the aviator style shades will no doubt reclaim its popularity and appreciation, becoming a must have item for tennis fans and fashionistas alike.

It was Rene Lacoste’s desire for the ultimate playing shirt that saw the establishment of the clothing line back in the 1930s. The French tennis star designed the 1212 polo as a way of gaining more comfort on the court, striving to find a replacement for the overly starched, long-sleeved shirts exclusive to the era. 75 years after its creation as a brand, Lacoste has continued to design luxury attire renowned for its quality and comfort. The label has successfully maintained its connection to the tennis court in obtaining unrivaled heritage in the sports fashion market and has gone on to compete with labels such as Polo Ralph Lauren as one of the superior labels for up-market mens and womenswear, showcasing it’s latest collections twice yearly at the New York Fashion Show.

lacoste3Back in the 1930s it was unheard of for a sportsman to design his own outfits, especially styles as daring and unique as the 1212 polo shirt. Lacoste’s avant-garde approach as a pioneer pathed the way for a tradition in the sport for tennis players to release their own brands and labels. British tennis player Fred Perry was one of the first to follow on from Rene Lacoste with his label becoming an alternative in tennis wear during the 1940s and 1950s. Today, Roger Federer, among others, has designed a signature brand in partnership with Nike with his initials emblazoned on his shirts, blazers and hats. However, as opposed to Lacoste’s desire for a more comfortable playing shirt, today’s stars merely see their designing input as a lucrative form of propaganda.

lacoste2The Lacoste brand is famed for its iconic logo of the green crocodile. The 1212 polo shirt was the first occurrence of a logo being adorned to the outside of an item of clothing, again proving its heritage and importance as a label in sports fashion history. The creation of the logo is said to have stemmed from a bet made between Rene Lacoste and his Davis Cup captain. If Lacoste were to win his next match then his captain would buy him an alligator suitcase. One American journalist coined Lacoste’s nickname, writing, “he didn’t win the bag, but he fought like an alligator”. Soon the legend of the alligator became a crocodile logo embroidered on the breast pocket of the Frenchman’s blazers. The icon was established.

It wasn’t until 1980 that Lacoste began designing and manufacturing lifestyle products such as footwear and eyewear. The inaugural pair of ‘La Lunette Lacoste’ had to match the unique style and iconic stature founded by the 1212 polo shirt. In keeping with the label’s sporty elegance the ‘101’ range of sunglasses were fashioned.
The distinguishing factor between the 101 range and other aviator-style sunglasses is the inclusion of the striking green enamel inlayed on the dual bar bridge of the glasses. Design director of Lacoste eyewear, Christophe Pillet, describes this special feature as “a perfect representation of the two worlds of Lacoste: sport and elegance.” Pillet goes on to talk about the importance of focusing on the iconic products of the brand, such as the 1212 polo. “When we found the 101 sunglasses range in the archives we decided to reproduce them immediately.” The only altering made to the original designs is the upgrade in quality of the iconic logo on the temples and the packaging. The sunglasses now come in a more modern green and white box, which is meant to invoke the spirit of the line’s tennis-wear origins. Limited to only a thousand pairs of the range being recreated, each individual pair will be marked on the inside of the temple with a serial number denoting its place in the series of 1000.
lacoste1
The idea of restoring and modernizing tenniswear echoes the state of play in the game itself. The golden age of tennis is continuously recreated throughout each era with ever more competitive and determined players. Each decade, it seems, the rulebooks are rewritten. This cyclic method is healthy and allows for previously impossible feats to be smashed both on and off court. There will undoubtedly be heavy competition for the limited edition sunglasses with only 1000 pairs being made. Hopefully the contention to obtain a pair of the prized shades will match the contention for glory on the courts in Melbourne this summer!

Lululemon: Workout Wear at A Stretch

Lululemon: Workout Wear at A Stretch

lululemon3
Synonymous with yoga and workout wear, the strange but catchy “Lululemon” is now a household name. Founder Chip Wilson began his career in sportswear design by founding famous surf/skate/snow brand Westbeach where he worked until 1998, when he began taking yoga classes. The vigor of the class and the lack of available clothing appropriately catering to his new pursuit inspired Chip to begin designing yoga and work out gear, selling and trialing it in the space adjacent to the yoga studio. From these humble beginnings, Lululemon was born.

lululemon1The philosophy behind the brand has been vital to its wide spread success. In a time when society is struggling with increased stress levels, longer working hours, and poor eating habits, the brand’s mission is to promote healthy lifestyles with these points: fun, balance, integrity, greatness and entrepreneurship. These elements are instilled in the employees, which is visible when entering a store due to the welcoming and helpful atmosphere the staff provide.lululemon4

lululemon5Why is Lululemon different from all the other work out wear brands? The ingrained philosophy is very endearing, however it is the product that makes a clothing brand successful. Lululemon has engineered some of their own original fabrics to cater to its clientelle- directly targetting runners, yoga lovers, dancers and those that want durable but very wearable work out clothing. Luon is a fabric made of nylon and lycra allowing increased movement without the risk of ripping and tearing. Silverescent contains real silver particles with antimicrobial properties designed for high sweat activities. Lullure is designed to feel like a second skin – ideal for dancers and those needing very slim lined active wear. These cleverly engineered fabrics are designed after feedback from high level athletes, yogis and dancers whom Lululemon has worked hard to establish partnerships with.lululemon2

While the original intent of the company – to “elevate the world from mediocrity to greatness” – sounds incredibly ambitious, it is this confident drive that continues to increase the brand’s popularity and sales. The wearbility of the clothes, the colorful marketing, the inviting staff and stores and the durability and technicality of the fabrics have made the brand a worldwide success with over 100 stores in Australia, Canada, the U.S and Hong Kong. Lululemon is an unstoppable force with an environmentally friendly conscience. The success of the brand is testament to the long known power of positive thinking.

By Johnny: Bold, Brave and Beautiful

By Johnny: Bold, Brave and Beautiful

BY-JOHNNY-FRONT-

Wet look mini dresses, zebra print and a whole lot of acid pink – nope, it’s not Lady Gaga’s dressing room, it’s the premiere range from hot new label, By Johnny, and it’s just as much fun!

Sydney designer Jon Schembri received rave reviews when he debuted the By Johnny label at the 2009 Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival, and his transeasonal capsule collection is fast gaining popularity with party girls all over Australia (including quirky Melbourne fashionista, Michi Girl, author of Like I Give a Frock.)

By Johnny combines on trend designs with a hint of elegance and a heavy injection of glamour. A must have for the modern party girl, the five piece capsule collection offers simple silhouettes and flattering cuts for dresses that are bound to draw attention. Warning: wallflowers need not apply.

Every party girl needs a little black dress and By Johnny provides a selection. There’s the decidedly eighties One Shoulder Wonder Dress, a range of backless body con dresses with hardware embellishments or the wickedly sexy Spike Me spray on dress with cap sleeves. The real stand out, though, is the range of Diva Drape dresses; these slinky mini dresses in wet look black and sparkly blue or pink really do belong under a flashing disco ball. For a cheap fashion fix, try one of the jeni from the block rock necklaces in aqua, yellow or pink.

Designer Jon Schembri was a finalist in the 2006 Australian Cotton Awards, and his previous designs have been featured in Shop Till You Drop magazine. In 2008, Mr Schembri had the honour of being crowned official designer for the prestigious Golden Slipper Stakes. He describes his latest endeavour as a ‘designer label without the designer price tag… I wanted to give my customers the opportunity to purchase a fun party dress without having to break the bank.’

Sydney residents can purchase these party staples at Paddington’s Fringe Bar Markets, while non-Sydney residents may e-mail their orders through the website. An online store will be ready in 2010.

North Bondi Ocean Swim 2010

North Bondi Ocean Swim 2010

North Bondi Ocean Swim 10 Jan 10-5676“Perfect” was the only word that could describe the conditions on Bondi Beach on Sunday 10th January. Bright and early on this day, hundreds of swimmers made the effort to swim almost 2kms around the Bondi Ocean Swim course.
The swimmers wore everything from budgie-smugglers to body-steamer wetsuits but the warm water made the former the most appropriate. Competitors of all ages and both sexes took part alongside each other.

Despite the fact that moored boats and ocean currents set up obstacles for the swimmers, the scorching sun was not the only thing to warm this day, the vibes of unity and good sportsmanship also were shining down on all the people involved in the 2010 Bondi Ocean Swim.
